Salzburg Hotels and the „Salt Castle“

Salzburg is Austria's fourth largest city and lies amidst the Alps. If you wonder what the name Salzburg means – it literally means „Salt Castle“. The name is not without reason: There are large salt deposits in our region. If you are interested visit one of the salt mines in Hallein or Hallstatt, a perfect activity for a rainy day.

Where to stay? Salzburg offers many hotels and many of them I don't know of course. But if someone asks me for a recommendation for Salzburg hotels – this is what I can say: Hotel Jufa, Hotel Guter Hirte, Hotel Astoria, Hotel Meininger, Hotel Trumer Stube and Hotel Scherer are well-known hotels and for sure a good pick for your Salzburg vacation.

Where to go for food? Austria is popular for pork with dumpling and Wiener Schnitzel, for dessert try apple strudel and Kaiserschmarrn. If you eat it all have a Schnapps for digestion afterwards. For traditional Austrian food check out Stieglkeller, Die Weisse, Eder Heuriger, Pauli Stubn or Krimpelstätter. Have dessert at the Steinterasse high up above Salzburg, enjoy apple strudel and a stunning view on the Old Town. Other recommendations for dinner are L'Osteria, La Stella Sternbrau, Fuxn, Humboldt Stubn, Urban Keller and Humbold Stubn.

Are you up for party? Where to go for a drink after a strenuous canyoning day in Salzburg? You are quite thirsty after a rafting adventure? Rainer and Judith have thought about it and can really recommend you to party in Salzburg! A perfect place for cocktails is Darwins or Pepe. Club feeling you find at Club Take Five or Half Moon. For a relaxing beer check out Die Weisse, Alchimiste Belge or Mullner Brau. If you like live music, we recommend the Irish Pubs along the Salzach river or the Rockhouse.

Adventures, Dinner, Party. Enjoy your visit in Salzburg!

Travel Tips for Salzburg

When to book? The earlier the better! Please make sure you book as soon as possible. In case you are late check out our calendar to see what's up next.

Bad weather? Salzburg can sometimes be a very rainy city and in that case you have two options: First option: Get soaked, get stoked and join a splish-splash adventure: rafting, canyoning, stand up paddling or other water sports. It doesn't matter whether it is rain or shine, you get wet anyways. Second option: Stay dry and indoors. We recommend exit the room, or gocart right in the city. Or Salzburg sightseeing attractions like Mozart's Residence, his Birthplace or the salt mines in Hallein and Hallstatt. Or check out our adventures you can do in bad weather.

How to get to our adventures? Our Salzburg attractions are not always close by and sometimes only recommended to drive by car (unless you are super patient in riding trains and busses). Here is our list of outdoor activities that are easy to reach by pubic transportation.

What to pack for your Salzburg vacation? We recommend a layering system – a base layer, a middle layer and a water proof shell on top to be prepared for your outdoor activity (or rain in Salzburg). Pack sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, umbrella and good shoes with a solid sole. Make sure you also bring some nice clothing for dining out – due to the Salzburg Festival the city can be quite posh at some places. And last but not least: Don't forget to buy Mozart Balls as souvenir!

Any questions? If you are not sure which outdoor activity is the right one for you or if you don't know how to get there, just send us an email. Kerstin, Eva and Judith are happy to help you out.
